SCHEME. NO.1 Assitance to farmers under High Yielding Programme Paddy is the main field crop grown during Kharif in these Islands. After the Tsunami disaster during December 2004 about 1375 ha. of paddy area is submerged further restricting the area available under paddy and other field crops. So emphasis is on crop improvement through selection of varieties, increasing crop intensity in the existing area, scientific Package of Practices and better management care. Introduction of High Yielding Varieties, indiscriminate use of PP chemicals and introduction of many Crop varieties has led to resurgence of pests, substantial reduction of natural enemies there by contributed to high population of pests and imbalance of micro ecosystem. In order to encourage farmers to undertake agriculture activities various agriculture inputs are distributed on subsidy basis by the department. Primary Agriculture Co-operative Societies (PAC’s)/ other agencies may be involved in the procurement and distribution of Agriculture Inputs for which necessary financial support will be provided. SCHEME NO.2 ASSISTANCE TO FARMERS FOR PROMOTION OF HORTICULTURE CROPS AND HIGH VALUE AGRICULTURE The Agro climatic condition of these Islands are very much conducive for plantation, spices and fruit crops. This scheme is specially meant to envisage development of hilly land for raising plantation, spices and Horticulture crops including rejuvenation of old plantation. It is programmed to develop these plantations by providing proper incentives and monitoring the survival rates of the seedlings. Under this scheme, planting materials produced are supplied to the cultivators at concessional rates and planting materials imported from mainland are distributed to the cultivators at 20% cost subsidy and 100% transport subsidy. SCHEME NO 3. Training and Extension Programme (IT & Demonstration Survey) The main objective of this scheme is to impart new developed technology to farmers. Under the scheme the department conduct demonstrations in the field of farmers/ departmental farms, organizing various training programme like one day, two days training camps, churcha mondals etc for farmers on the new trends in Agriculture by sending the farmers to mainland on educational tours to make them acquainted through mutual exchange with other farmers. All these efforts are to convince the farmers to change their old practice and adopt new method involved. Under the scheme the department also provides 100% subsidy on inputs required by the farmers for conducting demonstration including IPM. SCHEME NO. 1 SOIL CONSERVATION AND STRENGTHENING OF SOIL TESTING LABORATORY The undulated topography followed by high rainfall causes heavy soil erosion problems in these Islands. All the Soil Conservation work involves high cost and cultivators of these Islands are not in a position to undertake soil conservation work by themselves. Keeping in view of these facts this department has derived this scheme. The details of Financial and Physical achievements of this scheme during the year under report as follows: |
